Colorado: Rocky Mountain High . . . and Drones

According to the Department of Defense Report to Congress on Future Unmanned Aircraft Systems Training, Operations, and Sustainability (April 2012), Colorado has three (3) locations that have been designated as potential basing locations for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) [i.e. drones] (p. 8 ff.).

Notably, cadets at the Air Force Academy are being rapidly integrated into the U.S. drone warfare system. (See Air Force Times, November 9, 2013 "Academy cadets become UAV instructors" by Stephen Losey)

The table below gives information on the types of drones that are proposed for basing at each location.

BASE Predator/Reaper type Shadow/Raven type Other
Air Force Academy Aerosonde, Rascal, Alpha 60
Fort Carson MQ1B, MQ9A RQ-11B, RQ-7B
Pinon Canyon RQ-11B, RQ-7B

How long will it be before you see and hear drones overhead?
